Herbal Phamacy

For those seeking premade formulas as alternatives to custom made (powdered extract) formulas. There are hundreds of tabletted forms of herbal products on the market these days. Most are either traditional formulas, as in the case of many imported "Chinese Patents", or modifictions of these prescriptions to suit the needs of the patients concern, available materials, cultural considerations, and more.As an instructor of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 6 years, I have come to recommend products from several sources based upon the quality control of the manufacturer, the available formulas, the written suport materials, the manufacturring process, for example extract versus crude, and of course their efficacy in use. (the results)..

I have tried to list the clinically significant formulas, and formulas listed elsewhere on the treatment of disease pages. However, not all formulas can be listed here, and custom made formulas are still the refferred method for complex cases.

DIFFERENTIATION OF NON-INFECTION SKIN DISORDERS

MEDICAL THEORY:

Skin disorders are attributed to two main causes, one is toxic heat or damp heat which produces inflammatory responses, and the other is blood deficiency, which causes the sh'n to be inadequately nourished and allows for development of blood heat. Persistent skin inflammation at a single site suggests a blood stasis syndrome is also present. Despite the name "toxic heat" there may be no fever or redness associated with the disorder and despite the term "damp heat," localized drying of the skin may occur (especially with blood deficiency).

FORMULAS

ECZEMA: Dlctamnus 13. This formula is based on clinical work done in China and England on treatment of eczema, showing prompt responses in many individuals. Altemative formulas that may be helpful are Forsythla 18 and Kochla 13. Persistent cases may need to be treated simultaneously with a blood nourishing formula--Tang-kuel 18 is recommended.

PSORIASIS: Kochla 13, Zedoarla Tablets. Kochia 13 is a formula for toxic heat syndrome which is based on
clinical studies of psoriasis treatment in China. Zedoaria Tablets is a treatment for blood stasis syndrome based on a
successful treatment for psoriasis used in China. The two formulas may be combined.

RASHES/ITCHING: Xanthium 12., San She Dan Xanthium 12 is based on laboratory and clinical evaluation of
herbs that interfere with the progression of allergy responses (anti-atopy herbs). It is used for skin rashes and
hayfever. San She Dan is a formula for purging the gallblaWer; congestion of the gallbladder is believed to lead to a
damp-heat syndrome which can produce itching skin; this is probably not effective for itching due to flea bites. .

AUTO-IMMUNE DISORDERS: Llthospermum 15. SLE and scleroderma are examples of auto-immune
disorders that can produce the symptom of skin inflammation. Lithospermum is a formula based on treatments
claimed to be clinically effective for such disorders.

SWELLINGS: Chlh-ko and Curcuma. Forskin cancers, fattylumpsbeneath the skin, orotherswellings of undefined
etiology revealing no infection, Chih-ko and Curcuma may be used. It is based on Chinese herbal therapies that
have been used for treating "masses" which include such manifestations.

DRYNESS, CRACKING, BREAKDOWN OF SKIN: Tang-kuel 18, Zlzyphus 18. When certain oily components
are lacking in the skin, usually due to inadequate nourishment from the blood supply, the skin may become dry,
brittle, or ulcerated. Tang-kuei 18 and Zizyphus 18 both contain oily components that can make up for the
deficiency. Ziryphus 18 is selected especially for those who are also suffering from palpitations, insomnia,
hyperactivity, and rough skin.

LEUKODERMA: Tang-kuel Tablets: Leukoderma (vitiligo) is believed to be caused mainly by blood deficiency
syndrome, and usually requires the ingestion of psoralens for effective treatment. Tang-kuei TabJets is a blood
nourishing formula that includes the herb psoralea, a source of psoralens.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INFECTION SYNDROMES

MEDICAL THEORY: Due to modern advances in identification of pathogenic organisms, most earlier Chinese
medical theory associated with treatment of infectIons ar~d parasites has been modified. Herb c ompounds have
been tested in laboratory and clinical experiments for their effectiveness against certain organisms. In general, herbs
have a very broad spectrum of action so that a formula specified for viruses might be used with success for bacterial
infectors and vrce versa.
FORMULAS

VIRAL INFECTION: Isatis 6, flex 15, Gentlana 12. Isatis 6 is formulated on the basis of prescriptions claimed
effective in China for breating viral hepatitis. These same herbs are being used in the U.S. for treating HIV related
diseases. The formula has been claimed to be help, ful for sore throat that is likely due to virus infection. Ilex 15 is a
formulation based on three popular Chinese prescriptions for common cold and. influenza. It has been reported to be
more effective than the original preparations. Gentiana 12 is based on a prescription that was found to be effective
for herpes eruptions. In accordance with the previous experience from using the original or modified prescriptions, it
is suggested that Isatis 6 be used as a general anb-viral compound that is especially useful for systemic diseases
associated with viral infection; flex 15 be used for acute respiratory system disorders (or ENT diseases), and that
Gentian 12 be used for localized viral activity, such as herpes or warts.

BACTERIAL INFECTION: Forsythla 18, Patrinla 7, Coptis/Evodla Tablets, Colx Tablets. Forsythia 18 is
representadve of Chinese herb formulas used for common infections of the skin, eyes, or nose, Patrinia 7 is based on
a prescripbOn for treating pyrogenic ib~cti~ns producing an abscess, and Copbs/Evodia Tablets are suitable for
bacterial infections of the intestines. Isatis 6 is also appropriately selected for many bacterial infechons (especially of
the lungs land intestnes) that resist common antibiotics (e.g. mycobacterium). Coix Tablets are useful for acne and
other minor skin eruptions.

PARASITES: Plcrorrhiza 11, Omphalla 11. Both formulas may be helpful in the treatment of intestinal amoebas
(perhaps most effective if combined); omphalia 1 1 is comprised mainly of herbs that have been shown to inhibit or
expel worms. Omphalia 11 is frequently used as, a preventve for intestinal infections when traveling in an area of
high risk. Picrorrhiza 11 contains herbs that inhibit yeasts, such as candida.

INFECTIONS BY SITE: Asarum 14, Belamcanda 15, Carabao Tablets, Akebla 14, Jade Screen Tablets.
Localized infection of the sinuses, ears, or gums may be treated with Asarum 14 (this can be combined with
Forsythia 18); Lung infections can be treated with Belarncanda 15, infections producing high fever or convulsions,
usually involving the nervous system, such as meningitis, encephalitis, etc., may be treated with Carabao Tablets
(can be combined with Isatis 6), infections of the urinary systerr may be treated with Akebia 14. Acute disorders,
such as common cold and influenza, that persist i the form of respiratory illness (lungs and/or sinuses) are treated by
Jade Screen Tablets, which may al~ be used as a preventive~for infection during the influenza season.

DIFFERENTIATION OF PAIN SYNDROMES

MEDICAL THEORY: Pain syndromes result from sta`gnated, disordered, or interrupted circulation. The cause
may be internal (emotional stress, diet, drugs, organ dysfunctions, aging) or extemal (climate influence, primarily);
physical injury by sudden compression or extension, or by burning is considered a separate category. The stagnation
may involve qi (usually causing an ache but not a severe pain), moisture (which can cause numbness, swelling, and
persistent or recurrent aching), or blood (causing sharp pain that does not change site); it may involve two or more
of these. The longer the stagnation persists, the more likely there will be a combination of qi, moisture, and blood
disorders. Also, persisting stagnation is said to lead to a heat syndrome which can have systemic as well as local
impact.

FORMULAS

INTERNAL PAIN: Llndera 15, Cyperus 18, Dlagnostic Tablets. These formulas all have a basic warming
quality, promoting internal circulation. Cyperus 18 mainly addresses stagnation of qi and moisture, Lindera 15
mainly addresses stagnation of qi and blood, while Diagnostic Tablets address a complex of all three types of stasis.
The descriptions for humans are roughly as follows: Lindera 15 treats sharp pains that may be associated with the
liver, with menstruation (e.g. endometriosis, idiopathic cramping, uterine tumors); Cyperus 18 treats abdominal
discomfort, food reactions, depres~sion, anxiety, and insomnia; Diagnostic Tablets treats difficult to diagnose
disorders that involve aching of the abdomen.

SURFACE PAIN: Angellca 14, Clematis 19, Puerarla 10. These formulas all have a basic warming quality,
promoting circulation in the periphery (muscles, joints). Angelica 14 is mainly used for intermittent congested
circulation, as may occur with headache, Clematis 19 is mainly used for persistent inflammatory problems such as
arthralgia, neuralgia, and myalgia, and Pueraria 10 is mainly used for temporary but severe congestion that includes
bloocl stasis syndrome (e.g. from persistent abnormal posture or pressure on an area of the body). If internal
stagnation or pronounced blood stagnation is complicating the syndrome, these formulas may provkie only slight
relief and would need to be combined with a second formula. The usual combinations are Cnidlum 9 plus
Angelica 14 (e.g. used for migraine headaches); Myrrh Tablets plus Clematis 19 (usedl for severe joint pain or
inflammation of a nerve); Liquldambar 15 and Pueraria 10 (used for inflammalory disorders of the spine and
hips). In each case, the added formula is one that promotes circulation of blood. Clerodendron 6 is an alternative
formula for arthritis, used for cases where spasm and contraction of tendons and ligaments is present.

INJURY PAIN: San Ql 17, Myrrh Tablets, Llquldambar 15. These formulas are all aimed at helping resolve the
bruising, re-establish normal circulation and relieving pain. San Qi 17 is a general injury formula and may be used
in virtually all cases, Myrrh Tablets are especially suitable for tissue damage that results from a severe
inflammatory disorder (e.g. it is used for post herpetic pain syndrome), and Liquidambar 15 is especially useful for
injuries to the ~spine (including discs) and hips.

GE'NERAL PAIN RELIEF: Corydalls 5. This formula is comprised mainly of corydalis, an herb with general
analgesic properties (contains a morphine-like alkaloid which is non-addicting) plus peony and licorice which
together relieve spasms. Corydalis 5 can be used along with any of the previously mentioned formulas, or alone.

DIFFERENTIATION OF DEFICIENCY SYNDROMES

MEDICAL THEORY: Deficiency syndromes arise from three main causes. Internal causes include genetic
background, emotional tendencies, and experiences of stress that lead to insufficient organ function. External causes
include pathogens that damage the body fluids or physically attack the internal organs, and physical trauma (injury,
surgery, childbirth) that interrupts normal activities, damages circulation, and leads to general weakness.
Inadequate diet or reduced absorption of nutrients (e.g. due to parasites) will lead to deficiency of blood and may
produce impairment of organ functions.

FORMULAS

Ql DEFICIENCY: Glnseng 18, Lotus 9, Glnseng 6, Astragalus 10+. Qi deficiency mainly affects the Spleen and
Lungs. Ginseng 18 and Lotus 9 are designed to treat Spleen Qi deficiency, the latter having a mild sedative action.
Ginseng 6 is aimed especially at treating Lung deficiency; it has a moistening action. Astragalus 10+ is comprised
of herbs that are helpful in enhancing immune functions.

BLOOD DEFICIENCY: Tang-kuel 18, Zlzyphus 18. Ellood deficiency is usually a type of liver syndrome. Tang-
kuei 18 nourishes blood and Yin of the liver, regulates liver Qi, and counters heat in the blood. A special category
of heart blood deficiency, associated with insomnia and heart pa(pitations, is treated by Zizyphus 18.

YIN DEFICIENCY: Rehmannla 16, Tremella 14, Llly 14, Restorative Tablets. Rehmannia 16 is used for
sensation of dryness, mild heat, and for high blood sugar. Tremella 14 is for Yin deficiency of the liver, as occurs
with some cases of hepatitis, and it also nourishes the Yin of the kidney and lungs to treat fluids damaged by
feverish disease. Lily 14 nourishes the Yin of the lungs and is useful for disorders of the lungs and throat.
Restorative Tablets nourish the Yin of the kidney and liver and is useful for disorders associated with aging (e.g.
menopause) and the effects of prolonged and debilitating disease.

YANG DEFICIENCY: Gecko-A, Antler 8, Man's 1reasure, Woman's Treasure, Eucommia 18. Gecko-A is
designed to treat emptiness of Yang energy leading to exhaustion following otherwise normal expenditure of energy
(e.g. fatigue after work). Antler 8 nourishes the bone marrow and aids production of blood cells; it also enhances the
endocrine functions. Man's Treasure and Woman's Treasure treat male and female sexual disorders (e.g. infertility)
that arise from weakness of Yang. Eucommia 18 treats kidney weakness that influences the bones and joints, useful
for backache and joint pain.

ESSENCE DEFICIENCY: Eleuthero 10+, Ganoderma 18. Essence deficiency is a combination of the four
deficiency syndromes. These two formulas have similar actions, and are based on the use of two key tonic herbs,
eleuthero ginseng and ganoderma. Ganoderma 18 contains herbs for promoting blood circulation in addition to the
tonics, thus being suitable for syndromes that involve disruption of the blood system (e.g. post-surgical).

MISCELLANEOUS: Tang-kuel Tablets, Morus Frult Tablets, Recovery Plils, Cuscuta 15, Cordyceps 9.
Various combinations of deficiency syndromes require special formulations (see, A Bag of Pearls).
